Metal Roof Colors and Finishes
The color chip is the easy part. The coating under it is what still looks like that chip in ten years of Blue Ridge sun — or does not.

Why mountain UV is harder on paint
Asheville sits near 2,100 feet. Black Mountain and the ridges above it sit higher. UV is stronger than on the Piedmont, summer afternoons run hot, and winter nights drop hard. Paint that chalks in a coastal suburb chalks faster here.
A 70% PVDF system is built for that. The resin does not break down in sunlight the way polyester does. You still see some change over decades. You do not watch a charcoal roof go milky in eight years.
Those brand names are not a product we sell
Kynar 500® and Hylar 5000® are licensed resin brands used inside paint systems from several coil coaters. A contractor who says “it's Kynar” has not specified anything yet. Ask for the coating line, the 70% PVDF claim in writing, and the finish warranty as a number of years. Two quotes that both say metal and differ by $15,000 are often different on this line and on gauge.
Color choices that actually last here
- Grays, charcoals, and bronzes hide dust, pine pollen, and the slow chalk that every paint film develops.
- Forest and hunter greens fit the canopy in Fairview and on wooded West Asheville lots. Saturated greens on a cheap coating are among the first to go off.
- Galvalume and light gray stay cooler and suit newer ridge houses. Bare Galvalume will weather; that is the look.
- Reds and bright blues look sharp on day one and punish a weak coating. If you want them, pay for PVDF.
Printouts and phone photos lie. Look at a physical chip outdoors, in shade and in sun, against your siding. A north-facing porch sample is not the same roof you will see on a west slope at 4 p.m.
Oil-canning is not a color problem
The slight waviness in a flat pan shows more on dark, glossy finishes in raking light. Heavier gauge, striations in the pan, and careful handling reduce it. No installer can eliminate it. It is cosmetic. A contractor who promises a perfectly flat pan is overselling. Read standing seam in Asheville for the rest of the residential spec.
Historic palettes and covenants
In a local historic district, color can be a condition of the Certificate of Appropriateness. HOAs in Arden and on newer ridges often publish an approved list. Get that in writing before panels are ordered. We refer you to a contractor; we do not run the review.
No tax credit for the paint
There is currently no federal residential energy credit for a standard metal roof installed in 2026. The old 25C credit ended 31 December 2025, and metal roofs were never on that list. A cool-color coating can still cut attic heat. It does not create a federal credit.
Put the finish on the quote

What is a 70% PVDF finish?+
It is a fluoropolymer paint system. Kynar 500® and Hylar 5000® are brand names for that class of resin, licensed to coating manufacturers. This site does not sell a Kynar product. Ask the quote to name the coating chemistry and the finish warranty in years — often 30 to 40 years on a quality PVDF system — not a trade nickname.
Will a dark metal roof fade in Asheville?+
Every painted metal roof chalks and shifts color. Mountain UV at elevation, plus hot afternoon sun on a west slope, makes cheap polyester and silicone-modified polyester fade faster, especially in reds, blues, and deep greens. A 70% PVDF system holds hue far longer. Unpainted Galvalume weathers to a dull gray on purpose; that is a different look, not a failed paint job.
Can I pick any color in a historic district?+
No. A local historic district or local landmark needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, and color is often part of the review. Quiet earth tones and traditional grays and greens are easier to get through than a bright modern color. This site is a paid referral service and does not obtain the certificate.
Does a lighter color cool the house enough to matter?+
A reflective light coating bounces more solar radiation than a dark asphalt roof. How much that shows on a power bill depends more on attic insulation and ventilation than on the paint. Treat cooling as a bonus. There is currently no federal residential energy credit for a standard metal roof installed in 2026.
